Experience the Matala Beach Festival
The caves of Matala on the southern coast of Crete became famous as a haven for hippies in the 1960's-70's, attracting singer Joni Mitchell and others. The world moved on, and so have the hippies, but they left something of their spirit in the place where a yearly music festival attracting upwards of 10,000 people to this remote corner of Crete takes place every year in mid-June.
The Matala Festival, a unique experience by the sea, extends its invitation to the young and the young at heart to take part in this 3-day party from June 17th-19th. Activites include live music from Greek and international bands, yoga, zumba (dance fitness), games, kids' theater, etc. Play in the sea by day, rave to the music groups at night. Matala is 70km south of Heraklion by bus, on the beautiful bay of Messara.
