Crete Sand Sculpture Festival June 3-203-20 June 2017
Sand sculptures up to 3 meters high will be part of the Sand Sculpture Festival in Malevizi, Crete, outside of Heraklion. This will mark the second year of the only sand sculpture festival in Greece. The event will take place in two locations: at Amoudara beach and near the mouth of the Almyros River.
The public will be able to view the handiwork of the sculptors from June 3-20. The sculptors in preparation fit the sand into molds before completing the fine work of sculpting. The sculptures will remain in place until the end of summer.
The festival is organized by the municipality of Malevizi and the Melissa Women's Association of Malevizi, with various tourist companies as sponsors, all under the supervision of sculptor Manolis Kharkoutsis.
The festival will include the sculpture professor Yuri Miskos, sculptor Ludmilla Miskos, sculptor Manolis Kharkoutsis. The theme of the sand sculpture festival is "Summer Holidays" and the message of the organization this is year "Clean Seas, Clean Beaches."
"The aim of the municipal authority is to establish the festival as an institution that promotes art and at the same time promotes Amoudara as a tourist destination, as well as the tourist product of Crete as a whole," said Malevizi Mayor Kostas Mamoulakis.
Mr. Mamoulakis added that "after the great success of last year's pilot festival, with the thousands of visitors and the images of the impressive sand sculptures traveling all over Greece and many parts of the globe digitally, the municipality of Malevizi has established the Festival as an ongoing institution promoting the area and art.
