The President and Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Northern Greece Talks to Grekomania
Following a recent press conference at the Royal Theatre (next door to the White Tower) about the Summer program of the National Theatre of Northern Greece, we talked with the President of the National Theatre, Aris Stylianou, and Artistic Director, John Anastasakis.
What is the emphasis of this year's summer arts program at the NTNG?
AS - The National Theatre of Northern Greece is focusing on cultural events this summer, ushering int the summer season this year with a rich and highly versatile artistic program. With a deep sense of collective responsibility towards the local community, our goal is to give a platform for the cooperation and interaction of the public with art and culture. We invite you to enjoy the performances.
JA - This summer NTNG is daring to succeed. It is keeping the Royal Theatre open with audience favorite «The Beloved of the Shepardess». For the first time there will be an Art workshop for children that are stuck in the city all summer. They'll go on vacation at the theatre, in a sense. We'll also be going out to the public squares throughout the city and presenting an all new puppet theatre for the young and young at heart. We will also be presenting classic performances of «Seven Against Thebes», and «Antigone» in cooperation with the National Theatre and the Theatre of Cyprus. With all of that activity we're sure to succeed somewhere.
As announced at the press conference, the airline company Ellinair of the Mouzenidis Group will sponsor the air transport of NTNG What does this mean for you as an organization?
AS - With this new air transport agreement with the Mouzenides Group the NTNG puts a seal on and already highly beneficial relationship. This agreement was crucial, especially in the period we are going through right now, as broaden our horizons and develop beneficial working relationship with private sector companies in Greece.
JA - The opening of a new phase of cooperation with Ellinair and the Mouzenides Group gives us great joy. An energetic company such as this can only be of benefit to us as we all work together give our best efforts to raise the profile of Culture in Thessaloniki and Northern Greece. The National Theatre has to «spread his wings», so to speak, and Ellinair knows how to fly. As for the summer visitors to Thessaloniki, the Mouzenides Group will help offer cultural entertainment, and not just fun. In a sense, all roads lead to the Royal Theatre, which will be, this year, a cool, air conditioned environment and will present its performances in three languages; Greek, English, and Russian. So welcome to the Theatre
