Mayor of Lesvos to Share Olaf Palme Prize on January 30
Spyros Galinos, mayor of Lesvos, was co-winner of the 2016 Olaf Palme Prize along with Giusi Nicolini, mayor of Lampedusa and Linosa, Italy. The two mayors' citation for the prize commends them for their "inspiring leadership (in assisting) fellow human beings fleeing from war, terror, and misery."
The prize in the amount of $100,000, was created in the memory of Palme, a Prime Minister of Sweden who was assassinated in 1986. Mayor Galinos said that the prize "belongs to the citizens of Lesvos." The money will be used in part for the repair of the boats of two men who were most active in rescuing hundreds of refugees in 2015, Costas Pinteris and Thanasis Marmarinos. The boats suffered damage during the recent record-shattering cold spell in Greece.
The prize will be awarded in Stockholm on January 30.
