Paphos: European Capital of Culture For 2017
The ancient city of Paphos, birthplace of Aphrodite and visited by the Apostle Paul on his first century missionary journeys, has been blessed with a very modern honorific: This beautiful old city on the west coast of Cyprus is slated to be Europe's Cultural Capital for 2017.
Paphos is the smallest city awarded this distinction, according to Mr. Christos Patsalidis, president of the Paphos Organization. With the slogan "Linking Continents, Bridging Cultures," Paphos will host 1,500 artists who will take part in 152 cultural projects with the goal of making connections and bridging differences between the varied cultures of Europe.
The European Capital of Culture is the most important cultural institution of Europe and one of the most prestigious cultural events in the world. Τhe awarding of this title is a great tribute for any European city and country.
An impressive opening ceremony is slated for January 28-29, with several parallel events taking place including concerts, dramatic performances and 3-D views of the renovated City Hall and its Square.
Paphos has already been cited as a prime destination for tourists the world over, including the respected Conde Nast Traveler, one of the most prominent travel magazines in the world.
