Rise in Greek Hotel Bookings For Carnival Season
GTP (Greek Travel Pages) reports that bookings are up in Greek hotels for the three-day Clean Monday holiday next week. It adds that domestic tourism- Greeks vacationing elsewhere in Greece- is starting to come back, with hoteliers at the ski resorts of Arachova and Kalavryta reporting bookings of up to 80% of available rooms, and other cities showing increased hotel bookings ahead of the Clean Monday holiday, which marks the end of the carnival season and the beginning of Lent.
On the downside, farmers blocking roads to public trash dump sites have negatively affected bookings in places such as Zakynthos and Drama. Occupancy rates in Drama are only 50%, hoteliers report, while in Zakynthos, many carnival activities have been cancelled because of the garbage collection problem. Garbage is beginning to pile up in the streets of Thessaloniki as well, as disgruntled farmers have blocked the routes garbage trucks take to landfill sites.
