Clean Monday Celebrations at Athens' New Cultural Jewel
The newly opened €566 million Stavros Niarchos Foundation at the intersection of Syngrou and Poseidon Aves. near the bay of Phaliro, just east of Piraeus, will be the site of Clean Monday activities this Monday, February 27, as Orthodox Christians bid good-bye to the carnival season and begin the 40-day Lenten observation.
The "Koulouma in the Park" celebration will include traditional Clean Monday, or Koulouma, foods, such as shellfish, taramosalata (fish roe dip), a special kind of azyme bread, baked only on that day, called “lagana”, halvas, fava bean puree, and gigandes beans.
Kite flying will take place in the Center's spacious garden, and for those who don't have a kite, a kite-building workshop will take place for old and young on the southern paths between 11AM- 2PM.
In addition, live music will be provided by the 6-piece Manos Ahalinotopoulos Band, which will present a traditional Greek folk dance repertoire with special emphasis on music of the recently-finished carnival season.
