New Byzantine Museum Opens in Halkidiki
A New Museum has opened in an older building featuring exhibits from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine era in Elaiones, Halkidiki, just outside Nea Flogita. The museum is housed in a two-story stone building dating from the 19th century which has undergone extensive renovation.
The building was restored by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Halkidiki, and with EU and Greek government funds, and Mt. Athos. The reception area and central display areas show examples of religious life of Halkidiki during the Byzantine era (330-1453 AD).
Other rooms, when they are completed, will present a chronological profile of Halkidiki history from the early Byzantine years up to the 20th century.
The museum will also feature paleontological findings, an event venue, and a cafeteria and gift shop.
