Tembi Tunnel Opens in Time For Holy Week
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras officially opened the Tembi Tunnel on Thursday, April 6, 2017, just in time for the heavy traffic expected during the week before Easter. The project, along with two other tunnels on the National Road opening today, was decades in the works. It will bring a much-needed improvement in safety over the narrow, twisting road through the Tembi canyon, and cut travel time between Thessaloniki and Athens by an estimated 20 minutes.
Unfortunately, there will be a corresponding increase in tolls, as the Makryxori toll station will go from 1.40 to 2.5 euros, and the Leptokaria toll station will go from 1.90 to 3.20 euros.
